If most of your clothes travel in a suitcase, the backpack's job changes. It needs to carry the working day and the flight, not your entire wardrobe. That makes the Patagonia Black Hole 25L and Refugio 26L a more useful comparison than pairing a small daypack with a large Black Hole duffel.
A close capacity match with different details
One nominal liter separates these two examples, so capacity alone is unlikely to settle the choice. Patagonia describes the Black Hole 25L with a weather-resistant laminated shell and a rear handle that can serve as a luggage pass-through. The current Refugio 26L includes hydration access and internal organization.
Those differences suggest questions to ask about your own routine. Will the bag spend long airport stretches on a rolling case? Will you use it on local walks after leaving the laptop at the hotel? A feature that is useful during those hours matters more than a small difference in the printed capacity.
Be careful with Refugio generations
The current 26L product page uses style number 47914 and describes a padded 15-inch laptop sleeve. Older Refugio references can discuss a different arrangement, including removable organization. Do not buy the new version expecting a feature from an older review unless the listing explicitly confirms it.
The Black Hole 25L page also describes a sleeve for most 15-inch laptops. Measure the device itself, especially if you use a protective shell. Neither capacity number tells you whether a particular computer fits through the sleeve opening comfortably.
Choose a sensible daily load
A laptop, compact charger, light layer and water bottle create a fairly predictable assignment. Adding a camera insert, large headphones or gym shoes makes the shape more demanding. Look at how those rigid items would sit together instead of assuming that similar capacity means identical usable space.
Keep transit essentials separate from the large objects. A front or top pocket is valuable when it gives you a reliable home for documents or a charging cable. It is less helpful when overpacking the main compartment makes that pocket difficult to use. This is a good reason to leave some space rather than purchasing the smallest bag that barely closes.
Rain resistance needs a realistic interpretation
Patagonia's material descriptions support a discussion of weather resistance, not a promise that electronics stay dry in every storm. Openings and seams remain part of the system. If rain is a normal part of the trip, protect vulnerable equipment appropriately and avoid leaving the bag where water can collect.
Do not treat isolated customer stories as a controlled comparison between the two models. Different loads, product years and exposure conditions can produce very different experiences. The documented construction is useful; a universal waterproof verdict would go beyond it.
Where each belongs on the shortlist
The Black Hole 25L is worth examining when luggage integration and its shell construction appeal to you. The Refugio 26L deserves a look when daily organization and the ability to move between work and a local walk are central.
For one-bag travel with substantial clothing, compare an MLC or another dedicated travel pack instead. These smaller daypacks are strongest candidates when their daily role matches the way you actually move through a destination.
