Airports make both options look easy: smooth floors favor wheels, and a short walk makes a backpack seem light. The decision becomes clearer outside the terminal. Look at the route to your accommodation, the number of times you move and the load you are comfortable managing.
Follow one transfer from start to finish
List the steps between your arrival point and your room. Consider walking distances, stair access, transport changes and whether you will need to carry luggage into a small vehicle. A backpack keeps the load attached to you and your hands available; a suitcase carries its weight on the ground while rolling conditions permit.
Neither feature decides the result for every traveler. A short section of stairs may be an acceptable inconvenience for someone who benefits from wheels during the rest of the journey. A long walking transfer can favor a backpack, but only if the full load and harness are comfortable for the wearer.
Do not assume that an entire country has one kind of pavement or accommodation. Check the specific route and lodging information when it influences the choice. A centrally located hotel with a lift creates a different luggage problem from frequent moves between upper-floor rentals.
Clothing and equipment can choose for you
A broad suitcase can be convenient for structured clothes and several pairs of shoes. A travel backpack with a clamshell opening may organize similar items, but the soft load can bend or press differently while worn. Inspect the layout and think about how presentation-sensitive the clothing is.
For electronics or specialized equipment, protection and access are more important than the luggage label. Check the intended compartments and cases. A bag that fits all the objects but exposes a screen to hard pressure is not a successful packing solution.
A backpack can also serve as a day bag if it works comfortably with a reduced load. A large travel model may be cumbersome for that job, in which case you need to account for a separate smaller bag.

Lift the suitcase as you would on stairs and carry the backpack for more than a few steps. The outcome should reflect your abilities and preferences, not a general rule about which type is more adventurous.
Consider how the bag behaves in a small room. A suitcase may need an opening surface or floor area. A backpack may tuck away more easily, but some clamshell designs also require space to open fully. Access habits at the accommodation can matter over a longer stay.
Choose the inconvenience you can accept
Select a backpack when carrying the load, moving through transfers and keeping hands available work well for you. Select a suitcase when rolling support and the packing layout make the journey easier. A backpack plus a modest case is another legitimate arrangement if the ticket and itinerary allow it.
