The Aion 28 is the more natural starting point if the bag must go to work between trips. The Aion 40 deserves attention when clothing and larger equipment regularly travel with you. That is a difference in the bag's everyday job, not a verdict that one capacity is universally more useful.
Count the ordinary days, not only the holiday
A bag used five days a week for a laptop and lunch spends most of its life partly empty if you choose it around a rare long trip. Look at the typical load first. The smaller Aion can be easier to justify when the travel requirement is an occasional extra outfit rather than a full wardrobe.
If your usual travel load includes several clothing changes, larger shoes and a laptop, inspect the 40-liter model before designing an elaborate packing system around the smaller one. A compact bag that forces you to carry another loose tote may not simplify the journey.
Verify what expansion means on the selected model
Aion listings and page headings can use expansion language inconsistently. Do not assume that the 40 expands by the same amount as the 28, or that the largest number in a seller title is the collapsed capacity. Read the detailed specification for the model number and compare photographs of the expansion zipper.
Enter the dimensions for the state in which you expect to travel. Extra depth matters at an airline sizer even if the increase sounds modest in liters. If the listing does not clearly distinguish the two states, ask the retailer or manufacturer rather than filling in a number from another Aion size.
The removable storage is a practical distinction to examine
Thule's Aion 40 product information describes a removable rolltop compartment with a TPU lining, intended to separate dirt or moisture from the rest of the contents. Think about when you would use it: gym clothing after a workday, shoes during a short break or clothing awaiting washing.
Separation does not eliminate the need to dry damp equipment. Nor should a lined internal compartment be taken as proof that the entire backpack is waterproof. Check the smaller model's exact divider arrangement instead of assuming every Aion uses the same removable piece.
Also check what is included. Thule lists the Aion Sling as a separately sold accessory that can work with the travel backpack as a hipbelt. Include an accessory in your cost and weight comparison only if you actually intend to buy and carry it.
Rehearse access, not just capacity
Put the imagined flight essentials somewhere you can reach without disturbing clothing. Then consider the working day after arrival: does retrieving the laptop require handling the travel load? Look at the compartment opening and how the bag would sit on a desk, floor or luggage rack.
Choose the 28 when it handles the regular daily load cleanly and its verified travel capacity is enough. Choose the 40 when clothing volume is a recurring requirement and you accept a larger bag between stops. Confirm the laptop fit, precise dimensions and included parts on the selected listing before ordering.
