If your travel kit is a laptop, a light layer and a handful of essentials, the North Face Jester may provide all the organization you need. Borealis adds a different access and compression arrangement. The useful question is whether those differences improve your routine enough to justify the extra empty weight.
The current 28L models are not interchangeable
This comparison uses the unisex Jester NF0A3VXF and Borealis NF0A52SE manufacturer pages. Both list 28 liters, but Jester is specified at 740 g and Borealis at 1,050 g. Women's versions and smaller family members are distinct products and should be assessed separately.
Jester's listed dimensions are 46.1 × 27.9 × 21 cm, while Borealis lists 49.5 × 30.5 × 16.5 cm. One is shorter and deeper; the other is taller and shallower. Their equal capacity labels cannot tell you which is compatible with your airline's particular size limits.
The laptop opening changes the working routine
Jester describes a padded laptop sleeve within its simpler arrangement. Borealis specifies a dedicated laptop compartment. If you frequently remove the computer while traveling, examine the access route and whether packed clothing will interfere with it.
Do not decide from the advertised screen diagonal alone. The current pages list 16-inch compatibility, yet their published sleeve dimensions differ. Measure the computer, including its shell, and confirm fit for the selected model. A device that fits comfortably matters more than choosing the nominally more elaborate backpack.
Simple organization can be an advantage
A small number of belongings can disappear into a bag with many possible storage locations. If you already use one electronics pouch and one toiletry pouch, Jester's simpler interior may be easy to maintain. The bag supplies room while your pouches supply the categories.
A traveler carrying loose adapters, a tablet, sunglasses and documents may prefer more distinct storage. Borealis is worth examining in that case. The benefit depends on assigning items consistently; unused pockets add little when you continue placing everything into one compartment.
Use the weight difference honestly
The published difference is 310 g before belongings are added. That is a concrete saving, but it does not by itself establish which bag will feel better on your back. Strap fit, load position and how tightly the contents are packed also matter.
Try the actual load if possible, especially with a dense laptop. Walk for long enough to notice pressure rather than lifting the bag once by its handle. A removable waist strap on a daypack should not be mistaken for the load-transfer system of a fitted trekking pack.
Give the backpack a clear travel role
For a suitcase companion holding work equipment and in-flight essentials, start by asking whether Jester meets every requirement. For a mixed daily and travel role with more frequent laptop retrieval and external compression needs, compare Borealis closely. Neither is a substitute for a large clothing-focused travel bag merely because it holds 28 liters.
Keep the carry-on arrangement coherent: clothing in the suitcase, frequently needed items in the backpack, and as few duplicated accessories as possible. A simpler bag chosen deliberately can be a better travel purchase than an upgraded model whose additional features never become part of your routine.
