Start by emptying every pocket. Take out the tiny things too: a receipt behind the organizer, crumbs in a seam and the charging cable you normally leave inside. Clearing that debris can solve much of the mess before you add water.
Then work on the area that actually needs attention. REI’s light-cleaning advice includes wiping the interior and dealing with exterior spots separately. For a Kånken Classic, Fjällräven recommends local cleaning with lukewarm water, a mild detergent and a soft brush or sponge, followed by ventilated drying away from direct sunlight.
Keep the process proportionate to the problem. A dusty base does not require wetting the laptop compartment, and one food spill does not mean the shoulder straps need scrubbing. Follow your model’s instructions for coatings and trim, rather than applying the Kånken method to every material.
Leave pockets open while the cleaned area dries, and check the damp spot before putting the bag back into storage. If an odor remains, locate its source instead of covering it with fragrance. A forgotten item and a dirty padded panel call for different responses.
