Sometimes, but ordinary cubes mainly provide organization. They can make clothing groups easier to arrange and stop loose items spreading through the bag. The cube’s own fabric and zippers also occupy space, so adding one does not automatically increase usable capacity.
Compression cubes add a mechanism that reduces the height of a suitable soft load. The result depends on what is inside: airy clothing has more scope to compress than a rigid shoe or a dense stack of tightly folded fabric. Removing air does not remove weight.
The shape of the backpack matters as well. A tightly packed rectangular cube can leave awkward gaps inside a curved cavity. Several small cubes may fit those contours, but they also introduce more seams, handles and empty edges. Buying the largest possible set is not necessarily efficient.
Test one cube with the clothes you already plan to take, then pack the whole bag. Check whether the zipper closes more easily, whether awkward gaps remain and whether access improves. If the only benefit is fitting extra clothing that makes the bag too heavy, reducing the wardrobe may be the better solution.
